The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Medicine seeks a collaborative and transformational leader to serve as its next Chair of the Department of Medicine at the flagship Memphis campus. The incoming chair will have a unique opportunity to partner with a new dean, and university and clinical partners to substantially build clinical and research programs of excellence in the midst of historic change for the institution.
UTHSC is Tennessee’s only public, statewide, academic health system, dedicated to delivering groundbreaking discoveries with global impact and training the next generation of health science leaders. It is an exciting time for UTHSC as the main Memphis campus has invested significantly in renovation and construction, including a new Translational Science Research Building and a dedicated Multi-Disciplinary Simulation Building. The main UTHSC campus is located in Memphis and includes six colleges: Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy. The Health Science Center is part of the statewide, multi-campus University of Tennessee system, and has multiple clinical partners across the state. UTHSC has launched an aggressive campaign to double extramural research funding over the next ten years.
With 150 full-time and 300 affiliated faculty across 11 divisions, and over 230 residents and fellows, the Department of Medicine is the college's largest department. Department faculty and trainees provide care in concert with multiple clinical partners, including Methodist UT Hospital, Regional One Health, and the Memphis VA Medical Center. Research in the department spans basic, translational and clinical studies totaling $3.7 million in extramural funding.
The UTHSC College of Medicine is the state's largest with 656 medical students and over 1,200 residents and fellows in 90 GME training programs, and has a rapidly increasing research portfolio that exceeds $70 million in research revenues. Multiple physician practice groups make up the College of Medicine faculty practice arm with the largest number of faculty being members of University Clinical Health. In addition, the college benefits from close partnerships with major research institutions including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Reporting to the Executive Dean, Dr. Scott Strome, the incoming chair will have the opportunity to grow the size of the faculty, expand research and partner closely with clinical partners to coordinate care across multiple sites. The successful candidate will be an outstanding, nationally recognized leader with a substantial record of research, teaching, clinical, and administrative accomplishments in internal medicine. He or she will need exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills, and have the in-depth knowledge and ability to effectively lead physicians, researchers, and educators while embracing the importance of quality and financial sustainability. Integrity, intellect, the ability to work effectively with numerous stakeholders are essential. Qualified candidates must hold an MD or equivalent medical degree; be board certified in their specialty and eligible for medical licensure in Tennessee; and meet University of Tennessee criteria for appointment to a tenured senior level faculty position.
